ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify eucalyptus clones for the production of sawed timber based on dendrometric variables and longitudinal residual deformation (LRD), analyzing the correlation between these characteristics. 20 Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla clones with 13 years of age were analyzed. The crown size, diameter at breast height (DBH) and bark thickness were measured. There was a significant difference between the clones for DBH, LRD and bark thickness. There was no significant correlation between DBH and DRL. The correlation was significant between DBH and crown size, its being possible to affirm that crown size affects the diametrical growth of trees. DBH and bark thickness were also significantly correlated, in so far as trees with a wider diameter possess thicker bark. It was possible to select clones with better potential for sawed timber production, that is to say, elevated DBH with a reduced LRD.

ABSTRACT A 12-year-old Eucalyptus globulus plantation forest was studied with the aim of assessing and modeling the effect of both pruning and thinning activities on the growth strain. The stand is located in the Andean foothills of Bío Bío region in Chile. Two forest management activities were carried out after 2 and half years from planting, and were evaluated according to different pruning intensities (from 0 to 60 % from total height of the tree) and different thinning densities (800 UPH with thinning and 1.600 UPH without thinning). Furthermore, the effect of the crown classes (dominant, co-dominant and intermediate crown) was studied by the combination of two treatments on the behavior of the growth strain. Each treatment was defined by two levels of pruning and thinning. Data at single-tree level were collected to each sampling unit for estimating the most relevant parameter for the stand. Thirty-three trees in total were sampled. The growth strain was measured at the dbh in each one of them, with an extensometer designed by the CIRAD-Forêt. The pruning and thinning did not significantly affect the behavior of the growth strain in Eucalyptus globulus according to the research study; on the other hand, the crown class had a highly significant affect on the variation of strains, showing the highest levels of it in dominant crown class trees that trees belonging to co-dominant and intermediate crown classes, respectively. The logarithmic functions and the variance obtained by measurements of dbh, crown radii, and pruning respectively, were entered into regression models as predictor variables of behavior of growth strain, showing a R2 0,44 and a SEE 0,132.

RESUMEN Se estudió una plantación de Eucalyptus globulus ubicada en el sector precordillerano andino de la región del Bío Bío, Chile, con el objetivo de evaluar y modelar el efecto de la poda y raleo sobre las deformaciones residuales longitudinales (DRL). El lugar de estudio correspondió a un rodal de 12 años de edad, el cual fue intervenido a los 2 años y medio de establecido, donde se evaluaron distintas intensidades de poda (0% y 60% de la altura total) y densidades de raleo (1.600 árb·ha-1 (sin raleo) y 800 árb·ha-1). En cada tratamiento definido por la combinación de los dos niveles de poda y raleo, se estudió además, el efecto de la clase de copa (dominante, codominante e intermedia) sobre el comportamiento de las DRL. En cada unidad de muestreo se registraron variables a nivel de árbol individual, estimando los parámetros de rodal más relevantes. Se muestreó un total de 36 árboles, midiéndose en cada uno de ellos las DRL a nivel del Dap con un extensómetro diseñado por el CIRAD-Forêt. Los resultados determinaron que la poda y raleo no afectaron significativamente el comportamiento de las DRL en Eucalyptus globulus; en cambio, la clase de copa, tuvo un efecto altamente significativo sobre la variación de las deformaciones residuales, presentando los árboles dominantes mayores niveles de deformación que las clases de copa codominante e intermedia, respectivamente. El modelo de estimación incluyó como variables predictivas del comportamiento de las DRL, las expresiones logarítmicas del Dap y del inverso multiplicativo de la varianza de los radios de copa, además de la poda, presentando un R2 de 0,44 y un EEE de 0,132.

RESUMO A produtividade de plantios de Eucalyptus está crescendo e tem sido tópico de muitas pesquisas. A grande maioria dos estudos trata das variáveis aéreas como DAP, área de copa ou número de galhos e seus diâmetros. As raízes, entretanto, ainda não foram propriamente estudadas. O presente trabalho apresenta resultados de um método não destrutivo com equipamento técnico que foi utilizado para determinar variáveis de uma árvore (DAP, altura, área de copa) que possivelmente se correlacionam com área radicular Um pequeno plantio equiâneo com 39 indivíduos de Eucalyptus grandis x urophylla aos seis anos de idade foi estudado no trabalho. Os resultados demonstraram que área radicular tem a correlação mais alta com área de copa. No geral, a expansão radicular é muito superior à área de copa para os indivíduos desse povoamento. Além disso, a expansão radicular demonstrou-se muito mais homogênea do que a área de copa.

ABSTRACT The productivity of Eucalyptus at plantations is increasing and has undergone a variety of research studies. Most research is dealing with simple dendrometric variables like the DBH (diameter at breast height) and tree height, or more complex variables including crown parameters or variables concerning photosynthesis. The root systems, however, have not been well analyzed yet. The objective of the study was to analyze the root system with a non-destructive method and to evaluate possible correlations with dendrometric variables of the tree (DBH, height, crown expansion). A small experimental plantation with 39 even-aged, 6-year-old trees of Eucalyptus grandis x urophylla has been investigated within this study. The results of the study show the highest correlation of the root areas with the crown expansion. In general, the root area shows a significantly bigger expansion in the eucalypt plantation than the tree crown, with a more homogeneous development.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do espaçamento do plantio da madeira de eucalipto, quanto às suas características dendrométricas e a deformação residual longitudinal (DRL) da madeira e as relações entre essas variáveis. O material utilizado foi o Eucalyptus benthamii aos 5 anos de idade nos espaçamentos 2 × 3, 3 × 3, 3 × 4 e 4 × 4 m, a projeção da copa foi determinada através da medição de oito raios com ângulos variáveis, sendo elaborados mapas da distribuição e projeção da copa. As medições da DRL foram à 1,30 m do solo nas quatro direções cardinais, em árvores vivas, com o auxílio de extensômetro (Growth Strain Gauge), pelo método CIRAD-Fôret. Nos resultados houve grande variabilidade das variáveis de crescimento e dos níveis de tensão de crescimento para os diferentes espaçamentos. Os menores valores médios de DRL foram observados na direção sul, o aumento do espaçamento não alterou significativamente os valores da DRL. As correlações de maiores magnitudes ocorreram entre os valores máximos de DRL e as variáveis de crescimento árvore.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of planting eucalyptus wood with respect to its dendrometric characteristics and longitudinal residual strain (LRS) of the wood, and the relationships between these variables. The material used was Eucalyptus benthamii at five years of age in 2×3, 3×3, 3×4 and 4×4 m spacing. The projection of the crown was determined by measuring eight spokes with variable angles, and maps of crown distribution and projection were prepared. Measurements of LRS were taken 1.30 m above the ground in the four cardinal directions in living trees, with the aid of strain meters (Growth Strain Gauge) by the CIRAD-Forêt method. There was great variability in the results of the growth variables and levels of growth stresses for different spacing. The lowest average values of LRS were observed in the south direction, and increased spacing did not significantly alter the LRS values. Correlations between LRS and growth variables were only found with maximum LRS values for each tree.

RESUMO Espécies do gênero Eucalyptus, manejadas com o objetivo de produzir madeira para serraria em plantios de rápido crescimento, demonstram um grande potencial para substituir madeiras nativas nobres. Para que madeira de alta qualidade seja obtida, povoamentos precisam ser necessariamente podados. O objetivo do estudo é analisar o desenvolvimento dos galhos presentes no momento da primeira e segunda podas e quantificar a biomassa obtida com a remoção dos mesmos. Dois povoamentos de Eucalyptus grandis foram selecionados (idades 18 e 36 meses) para a avaliação das podas de 0 a 3 m e de 3 a 6 m. O diâmetro e comprimento médios foram 18 mm e 2,1 m no povoamento mais jovem e 21 mm e 2,3 m no mais velho. A relação entre o diâmetro e o comprimento dos galhos pode ser expressa em um modelo linear (R²=0,8). Nos dois povoamentos uma maior proporção de galhos já estava morta. O peso seco em estufa da biomassa produzida pela poda dos galhos foi 2,2 ton.ha-1 na primeira intervenção e 1,2 ton.ha-1 na segunda. Os resultados demonstraram que o desenvolvimento dos galhos em plantações de eucalipto estabelecidas com espaçamentos amplos e desbastadas estão de acordo com o objetivo de se produzir madeira de alta qualidade. A poda, entretanto, precisa iniciar antes dos 18 meses para evitar galhos mortos. O peso seco da biomassa de galhos produzida nas duas intervenções é insuficiente para permitir sua utilização comercial.

ABSTRACT Species of the genus Eucalyptus managed for sawlogs in fast-growing plantations show high potential for substitution for valuable native hardwoods. To obtain high quality wood, technical pruning is necessary. The objective of the study is to analyse the development of the branches for the first and second pruning lifts and to quantify the biomass of the pruned branches. For the study two stands of Eucalyptus grandis were selected (age 18 and 36 months) for evaluating a pruning lift from 0 to 3 m and 3 to 6 m. The average branch diameter and length were 18 mm and 2.1 m in the younger stand and 21 mm and 2.3 m in the older one. The relation between branch diameter and branch length could be expressed in a linear model (R² = 0.8). In both stands a higher proportion of branches were already dead. The oven-dry biomass of the pruned branches was 2.2 ton.ha-1 in the first pruning lift and 1.2 ton.ha-1 in the second. The results showed that branch development in wide spaced and early thinned eucalypt plantations is in line with the objective of high quality wood production. Pruning should take place before 18 month to avoid dead branches. The oven-dry branch biomass cut in the two pruning lifts shows a low volume making a commercial utilization difficult.

A complexidade dos processos de formação, estruturação e orientação do lenho de reação origina estudos buscando relacionar implicações tecnológicas da madeira. Em coníferas e folhosas, a madeira de reação é reflexo das diferenças químicas, físicas e anatômicas, recebendo denominações específicas. As diferentes características peculiares ao lenho de reação influenciam nas propriedades físicas, químicas, anatômicas e mecânicas, podendo limitar seu uso, com tais implicações ainda sendo ignoradas.

The complexity of the formation, structure and orientation of reaction wood is the reason for studying the interaction between technological properties. In both softwoods and hardwoods, reaction wood reflects the chemical, physical and anatomic differences, receiving specific denominations. The specific characteristics of reaction wood influence the physical, chemical, anatomical and mechanical properties of wood and may be a limiting utilization factor - this fact is still often ignored.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, foi analisado o potencial do crescimento diamétrico de Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. em diferentes sítios, com o objetivo de obter informações para o manejo dessa espécie em florestas heterogêneas inequiâneas, visando à produção de madeira de alta qualidade em árvores pré-selecionadas. O material usado constitui-se de 400 árvores de florestas nativas e plantios, crescendo sob condições e tratamentos variáveis nos estados de Santa Catarina, Paraná e Rio Grande do Sul. O método usado para investigar a relação entre a largura da copa e o dap foi baseado na projeção horizontal da copa da árvore individual. Usando 16 amostras de 25 árvores, foram estudados vários estágios de desenvolvimento. Para cada amostra, foi feito um mapa de distribuição das árvores e das projeções das copas para avaliar o efeito da competição. O estudo mostra que existe uma estreita relação entre a largura da copa e o dap, que pode ser usada para o desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas de decisão aplicáveis em árvores individuais para o manejo de araucária em florestas heterogêneas inequiâneas ou para a produção de madeira de alta qualidade com árvores pré-selecionadas. Também, mostrou-se uma estreita correlação entre o crescimento de diâmetro e a qualidade do sítio, pois a expansão máxima da copa depende da qualidade deste, indicando que ele deve ser considerado como fator limitante para o manejo do crescimento.

ABSTRACT In this study the potential of diameter growth of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze. at different sites in Southern Brazil was analyzed. The objectives were to obtain information for the management of this species in uneven-aged mixed stands for high value timber production focused on future crop trees. The material consisted of 400 trees of native forests and plantations growing under varying site conditions and treatments in the states of Santa Catarina, Parana and Rio Grande do Sul. The research method applied was an ex-post facto (observational) one that is based on an explorative data analysis of data taken from 16 temporary sample plots, each consisting of 25 araucarias. For each plot it was made a stem and crown distribution map. The study shows that crown width is a very good estimator for diameter growth and it is closely related to the easy measurable variable diameter at 1.30 m. This relationship was used to develop decision tools based on the management of the growing space of the individual tree. The maximum crown expansion at a given age and therefore also the maximum radial increment are strongly related to site quality. That means that site quality has to be considered as a limiting factor for the production goals in araucaria stands. Decision tools have to be adapted to these circumstances.
